I am guilty of this. If we look close at our workflow how much of it is attempting to multitask?
The Bible and Productivity
I have always been interested in productivity. How can we be more effective? Efficient? Get stuff done with more ease and with less stress. We have been given one life, we should use the gifts God has given us to the fullest.
The Bible is full of productivity and leadership advice. Here is a couple of bible verses that I have come across lately.
Making the most of our time-*Proverbs 6:9-11 Solomon telling us not to waste our life before it is too late.
9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
11 and poverty will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.
Delegation-We need a community to get stuff done-*Exodus 18:17-23 Moses getting advice from his father in-law Jethro.
17 Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. 21 But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”
A big mistake I make is trying to do everything. I need to delegate more. Michael Hyatt has a great podcast on this. I recommend you listen to this if you don’t know how to delegate. The Fine Art of Delegation also on iTunes.
Recovery and rest is so important to being productive. We all need recovery. At some point in your life this will become a must. We can only go so long before we need rest. Going 24 hours a day is not sustainable. We just can’t keep this pace.
Rest and Recovery-*Mark 6:31 Jesus commands his disciples to slow down.
31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
Just finished a good book that talks a lot about energy and recovery, The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz.
